The Beautiful Game
One of South Africa’s greatest assets is our bountiful and passionately-preserved wildlife. South Africa is home to ‘The Big 5’ Game animals of Africa, whose population is protected and flourishing at a time when poaching and human encroachment has seen numbers diminish dramatically, threatening extinction of many species across the African continent. South Africa is leading the conservation battle and has extended in a very significant manner the land restored to its natural habitat, developing its network of national and privately-owned Game Parks across the country. The largest and most famous of all the parks, The Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga, today covers almost 2 million hectares alone and attracts over a million visitors annually.
In February 2008 we launched our The Beautiful Game project, to celebrate our wonderful indigenous wildlife. Our long-term aim is to develop a Big 5 range of wines, linking one wine to each of the animals concerned. Currently we have a fabulous Chenin Blanc from old vines on the Helderberg Mountain and a cracking Shiraz, blended from 2 of the Cape’s most formidable Shiraz sites on the Perdeberg and Helderberg Mountains. We are planning to launch our Stellenbosch Cabernet-Sauvignon in the second half of 2010 and are studying the possibilities to also develop a wildlife sponsoring project, through The Beautiful Game initiative, so watch this space for some exciting developments on that front in the coming months. This will be a great addition to our well-established social-upliftment project Land of Hope (see www.landofhope.co.za).
So whether you are viewing our fabulous wildlife from your armchair at home or from the back of a Land Rover in one of our amazing Game Reserves, you can raise your glass to and celebrate The Beautiful Game in South Africa !
